New Year.... Big Changes!

Happy New Year to you all! It seems like just last week was the Christmas party and here we are in January.

We had a bit of a slow start but your elected officials have been quite active and the year ahead is already filling up with activities!  The events calendar has been updated with all of the dates laid out for the year. Please check back as we continue to add details and information to the dates listed.

To kick things off we have our first meeting January meeting Sunday the 22nd  1:00pm at Mulhall’s

Our meeting will begin with a roughly 45 minute workshop on "How to Choose a Bonsai Pot." We will cover topics such as shape, size, color, and texture of a container. As well as the what is appropriate at different stages of development for the tree. Lastly, we will talk about where we can obtain the pots as well as how to prepare them for trees.

Additionally, on the agenda is a silent auction of four trees that were donated to the club. Please refer to our emailed bulletin for more details on the auction or workshop

NBS Fall Exhibition 2016

The NBS held its seventh annual Fall Exhibit in conjunction with Lauritzen Gardens' Japanese Ambience Festival.  Once again, we had an excellent variety of specimens on display, including some fine Satsuki Azalea specimens from Japan, collected trees from the region and west coast, in addition to specimens trained from nursery material. This coincided very well with our educational display this year - The Origins of Bonsai.  Native Collected, Mountain Collected, Imported, Cacti/Succulents, Nursery Material, Air Layer, Cuttings, Seedlings, etc. were all represented. The display included a flyer for each category, in addition to at least one example from a club member.  This was a remarkable team effort, organized by Mark Samuel and Linda Smith.

Max Miller and Jennifer Riepe led our demonstration on Saturday discussing forest bonsai basics and planting a seven tree elm forest.  On Sunday, Loren Buxton and Mark Samuel led a seminar on using native and mountain collected material for bonsaiOur sale table had some very special offerings, including pottery from our local favorite, Stephanie Walker, and great deals on a wide range of material.  As part of the sale table, Scott Luke displayed some special pieces, including containers from Nick Lenz, the Yamaaki kiln in Japan and an antique Chinese container from the Nakawatari eraWe also offered a range of starter plants, soil and training pots for the bonsai beginner.

Special thanks go to those who participated and spent time as greeters over the weekend.  Check out photos from the event.

NBS Fall Exhibition 2015

The NBS held its sixth annual Fall Exhibit in conjunction with Lauritzen Gardens' Japanese Ambience Festival.  Once again, we had an excellent variety of specimens on display, including world-class examples of popular Japanese species, several unique succulents and tropicals, and a Southern Live Oak to start the show. Our training/workshop section this year included a native plum complete with training diagrams, in addition to Chinese Elm, Olive and Satsuki Azelea from workshop participants.  New and well-received for this year was an educational display that included examples of various bonsai styles.  Max Miller and Scott Peterson led our demonstrations on Saturday and Sunday, performing some heavy pruning and defining the initial structure on some old juniper material.  Our sale table had some very special offerings, including pottery from our local favorite, Stephanie Walker, and some sweet deals on bonsai from Scott Luke.  Special thanks go to those who participated and spent time at our booth over the weekend.  I'm happy to report that we had our best member participation yet!  Check out photos from the event.

2016 Novice Workshop Preview

The material has been chosen for next year's Novice Workshop.  The Double Flowering Plum is well known for its fragrant double, candy-pink flowers that emerge in spring.  It also has an attractive yellow-bronze color in the fall.  We'll begin official registration in a few months once we have the details confirmed.

Here is a progression from October 2014 to August 2015:
